WHAT THE CRITICS AND VIEWERS ARE SAYING:

“BRILLIANT- A film of great significance!”
— Le Monde

One of the TOP 5 FILMS to see this year!
— Bob Mondello, NPR

“Fierce and focused… “Brainwashed” is a bracing blast of critical rigor.

One of the Year’s Top Ten Films!

- Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN

“Nina Menkes’ eye-opening documentary will forever change how you look at films.”
— Kate Erbland, INDIEWIRE

“Menkes is a real no-bullshit breath of fresh air. With a torch. And with any luck, she’s heading your way to set fire to something, soon."
– Finn Halligan, SCREEN DAILY

“Accessible, engrossing, urgent, and horrifying... It should be projected onto a building and played on a loop in Studio City. — Lena Wilson, THE PLAYLIST

“Nina Menkes is going to change the world… Brainwashed is one of the most important films anyone can watch right now!” — Joey Soloway, producer/director

“Explosive and compelling! [Menkes] pulls off the tricky balance of making Brainwashed digestible and illuminating for the casual cinema-goer while being stimulating and paradigm-shifting for fellow filmmakers and scholars of film.”
– James Kleinman, THE QUEER REVIEW

“Menkes gives a persuasive, sometimes nightmarish sense of the leering perspectives found across much visual media....What’s most important is how we can act on [the film’s] prescriptions—if it’s not too late.”
— David Katz, THE FILM STAGE

"The disruption of traditional power that "Brainwashed" puts forward to the language of cinema is compelling and progressive; it presents a much needed challenge for all filmmakers to find truer ways to depict who we are as people.
– Isaac Chung, Director of MINARI

"Menkes circles around the disappointment, the sense of exclusion and of being denied as a human being, the pain and the anger experienced by a feminist filmmaker like her, and many women who share her emotions, when exposed to the mainstream language of cinema and the sexist way the film industry is run. She points at the thorny question and the contradiction that many of us have experienced: how can you love a film when you disagree with its sexual politics?
Bérénice Reynaud, SENSES OF CINEMA

The knowledge that took me years of study and practice to acquire is now available to anyone who watches Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power.
— Marilyn Ferdinand, ALLIANCE OF WOMEN FILM JOURNALISTS

“Subversive! Menkes is not afraid to take on the film canon, and the directors hailed as the gold standard.” – Ray Lobo, FILM THREAT

“[Menkes] calls for a radical reinvention of how shots and film grammar are formulated. Crucially, Menkes' documentary is not calling for cancellation. Viewers are meant to wrestle with this film, not passively consume a simple message — and they’ll leave invigorated.”
— Violet Lucca, BUST

BRAINWASHED: SEX-CAMERA-POWER, based on director Nina Menkes's cinematic presentation, ‘Sex and Power, the Visual Language of Cinema’, uses film clips by A-list directors from 1896 through to the present, to show how sexist shot design contributes to a pervasive environment of sexual harassment and assault, as well as employment discrimination against women, especially in the film industry.

Presented by Tim Disney, Susan Disney Lord, Abigail Disney & Menkesfilm, with additional support from the EOS World Fund

THE MENKES LIST

Shot design is gendered: Male and female actors are often shot completely differently. Check out the list below the next time you’re watching a movie. Even if there is a female lead character, she is often disempowered through shot design. UK blogger Caz Armstrong dubbed Nina’s points The #MenkesList:

Camera techniques 1-4 often undermine the female characters' narrative position

‘This system of shot design disempowers women, ties into the epidemic of sexual harassment and assault as well as the employment discrimination we face… and I call it the bedrock language of rape culture.’
